The busy traffic intersection of University Ave. and Curtis St. already feels somewhat safer with the arrival of Nataniyah Wilson, who has been assigned by the City of Berkeley Public Works Department to stop cars and other vehicles as people walk and bike across the street near the Oxford playground.
Wilson may be new to the Oxford community, but she's a longtime Berkeley resident. Wilson attended Thousand Oaks Elementary School, Berkeley Arts Magnet, King Middle School, and Berkeley High, graduating in the Class of '96.
"I remember when Oxford was the Berkeley Adult School," Wilson says.
Wilson has noticed that Oxford parents are happy to see a watchful pair of eyes, that bright reflective vest and handheld red stop sign patrolling the crosswalk once again. The crossing guard position had been unfilled for about five months of the school year.
"I've definitely seen the need" for a crossing guard, Wilson says, as drivers rush by and families approach the curbside with caution.
Take a moment to introduce yourself when you see Wilson in the morning. She's a Berkeley public school parent too with her youngest of three children attending Berkeley High. An older child attends Sacramento State University, and the eldest works at Glenview Elementary School in Oakland.
