Open House tonight! (psst: there will be ice cream)
Open House is tonight, Thursday, May 21, 6:00-7:15pm. Please join us that evening to celebrate our children’s accomplishments. We invite families to visit classrooms and admire all the work our children have done this year. In addition, Ms. Muller’s 4th graders are holding their annual Ice Cream Social in the cafeteria. After you look at your child’s classroom work, stop by the cafeteria and celebrate with an ice cream sundae or a baked treat. Prices are low, and all profits buy new books for the Oxford library!
You + Framed art = More art supplies
Tonight at the Oxford Open House, our world famous art teacher Ms Anna will host an auction to raise money for art materials for next year’s art program. All the pieces will be framed and ready to take home to hang on the wall. Bring cash (for ice cream, too!) and checkbooks and be ready to support Ms Anna’s creative vision and contagious enthusiasm. The art is perfect for homes, offices, friends, & family.
The Lost and Found is calling your name
The end of the school year is coming and I bet you’re wondering just where that sweatshirt ended up. With the weather changing from warm to cold to warm again, so many articles of clothing are left around school and forgotten. Well, we have quite the selection at the Oxford Breezeway Lost & Found! Come by, sort through to see if your child’s clothes are there. At the end of the school day on June 12th, all remaining clothes will be bagged and donated to Emeryville Community Action Program. Of course anything that has a name on it will be put aside. Thank you and happy hunting!
Go book shopping, support Oxford
Next week, Sunday, May 24 – Saturday, May 30, Mr. Mopps’ will donate 15% of all purchases made at their bookstore to Oxford, including gift cards, when you mention Oxford when you purchase! Stock up on summer reading, pick up some favorites as gifts for upcoming birthdays, or to contribute to the Oxford Library. Tell your friends and family and get down to their shop, 4 doors down from the toy store, at 1417A Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Mr. Mopps’ Children’s Books provides an immersive literary environment for kids, ranging from board books for babies to young adult fiction and reference books for all ages. They are a proud source of Equal Read books, celebrating diversity in children’s literature. For more information, check out www.equalread.org
The Summer Slide!
Have you ever heard of the Summer Slide? It’s not a fun water slide or anything to do with the Electric Slide.
The Summer Slide are the reading losses students face during a summer with no school. When students do not read over the summer, they “slide” back. This trend disproportionately affects our families who are struggling financially, because they often cannot afford summer school, academic summer camps, and stacks of books. Recent research shows that between K-12 grade, students from socioeconomically disadvantaged homes will be 3 reading levels behind just from the summer slide alone!
The great news is that we know how to solve that problem! Recent research shows that if we can get 11 highly engaging books at their level into the hands of those students, they will not fall back, and may even gain reading levels!
Ms Brollier is asking for the help of the Oxford Community. She has written a Friends and Family Grant to get 11 books into the hands of our 27 most socioeconomically disadvantaged students’ hands. Will you donate today?Anything helps! Imagine the difference you could make in a child’s life: they could return in the fall reading BETTER than when they left for summer. Please donate today!
