Note from Gardener Sarah!

Updated: Feb 6

Oxford is fortunate to have a beautiful garden and our amazing garden instructor Sarah Winer (aka Gardener Sarah). See below about her upcoming garden improvement ideas and asks.

Oxford takes down the tent shade in the garden during the winter due to the tent's inability to handle winter weather (rain and wind). Not only does the tarp shred and break but it can pose safety risks during high winds. However, there are still some winter days where the sun is really bright and hot in the garden. Gardener Sarah has a plan for using wine barrels and planting vines for long term, sustainable shade. To do so, she needs 4 wine barrels or wood boxes at $70 (barrels) or $55 (boxes) from East Bay Nursery. Does anyone feels like donating these items or pursuing ways to get this donated from free (asking nurseries or wineries)?

She is also looking for 20 bags of bark mulch. Ideally this would be shoveled by volunteers for a work day from the community pile at Bancroft and strawberry Creek Park. This requires a truck and team of people but is free!

Lastly, she is wondering if anyone is a fruit tree pruner or is there a parent that has experience with pruning trees? She would love some help with this but it needs someone knowledgeable!

If you are interested in helping Gardener Sarah with any of these please email her at sarahwiner@berkeley.net or PTA@oxfordelemetary.org.
