Shade
Steve Collins, BUSD Maintenance Manager, met with the PTA to talk about ways to add shade structures and protect students from sun exposure at the Oxford campus. The group discussed shade at the play structure, shade at the tables, preservation of pathways to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act, fire routes, and grant funding to help foot the bill.
Estimated costs included “tens of thousands” for shade on 3-4 play structures and an additional $25,000 for consultant fees. Collins also advised the group to identify an architect who has experience with permitting through the California Division of the State Architect.
Books, Read-a-thon, and other budgetary items
The PTA approved two funding requests from the Oxford Library, one for the purchase of popular book titles to promote participation in the Read-a-thon and another to support the Our Time To Enjoy Reading (OTTER) program. Students review a selection of recently published paperbacks and select favorites. The library uses results from the competition to inform additional book purchases.
The PTA also approved a retirement contribution for Lead Day Custodian Rodney Hill, Target cards as holiday gifts for families in need, and funding requests for classroom supplies from Kindergarten Aide Ananda Richmon and Third-Grade Teacher Laurie Nielson.
At the time of the PTA meeting, the Read-a-thon fundraiser had collected about $22,000. At the time this newsletter was distributed on Dec. 19, collections had topped $30,000.
